30 April (Part 2) - Wilton Road is nearly done. And about time too

Wilton RoadHere's a picture that will bring joy to motorists who dare to venture into the redevelopment mess that is Abbey Wood - and many a bus driver too. After three long weeks the Abbey Road/Knee Hill traffic lights have gone.

The Wilton Road regeneration which was slated for completion by 3rd March is now pretty much done bar the tidying up.

Why the job took so long no one knows but the quality of the work looks to be pretty good, the design perhaps less so in places. The Greenwich side is strewn with grit from planted areas and the Bexley footpath is undulating and impedes the shop shutters here and there.

One of the men working there yesterday was more than a little upset that he had turned up early with his gang intending to finish the job by midday but the traffic lights had failed causing him to put two men behind Stop Go boards.

Wilton Road Wilton RoadMaybe as a result the final section has rather more concrete infills than can be seen elsewhere and late in the afternoon when the men had left the site it was still protected by the traffic lights. Sometime later they disappeared so congratulations are due to whoever came back to clear the road.

Meanwhile, only a short distance to the north nothing significant has been done on the Harrow Manorway flyover and a quarter of a mile away absolutely no progress has been made in demolishing the last remnants of Tavy Bridge.

According to my Thamesmead reporter no date has yet been fixed and demolition will be at the end of May or even later.
